Mulhern & Kulp is a full service structural engineering firm with a unique specialty in residential wood-frame design. We customize our services to meet our clients’ needs, however big or small. With every project, we aim to demonstrate, through our service and expertise, that we are an asset and long-term partner to our clients.

Our projects range from: additions, historical renovations, single-family homes, low and mid-rise residential/mixed-use buildings, and commercial buildings. Our operations cover the entire East Coast with our offices conveniently located in suburban Philadelphia.

Michael Mulhern, P.E. – Principal

Mike is the son of a hands-on custom home builder who became a skilled carpenter foreman. After college, he spent a few years working as a building contractor. With a desire to combine his education with his experience, Mike “hung up his hammer” and began his career as a structural engineer. He received his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering from Widener University. Mike is an Adjunct Professor of Engineering for Widener University.

Joe has dedicated his entire professional career to residential wood-frame design. Over the years, he has worked with architects, production builders, custom builders, and developers in 21 states. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from Penn State University. Joe currently is the Education Committee Chairman for the HBA of Bucks/Montgomery Counties of Pennsylvania.
Stephen D. Ives, P.E. – Associate/Project Manager

Steve has developed an extensive resume of nationwide residential wood-frame design experience since graduating from Drexel University with Bachelor’s Degrees in both Civil and Architectural Engineering. He has been involved in just about every type of wood frame residential project - from high-end custom homes to production homes to mid-rise multi-family multi-story apartment buildings. Steve also manages the firm's Information Technology needs.
Christopher K. Scharff, P.E. – Project Manager

Chris has extensive experience in the structural analysis and design of traditional, commercial and multi-story buildings. He graduated from Villanova University with a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Civil/Structural Engineering. His resume of project experience includes: office buildings, shopping centers, institutional, and mid-rise residential buildings using various construction materials including structural steel, light gage metal, masonry, precast plank, reinforced concrete, and wood framing.
Bert Coelho, P.E. – Project Manager

Bert has extensive experience in a wide range of building projects, including:  residential, commercial, institutional, and rehabilitation projects.  He received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil and Architectural Engineering from Drexel University.  The types of projects that Bert has managed and designed include: mid-rise & high-rise residential buildings, retail centers, office buildings, university structures, custom homes, production single family homes & townhomes.
Rick Woywod – Director of Inspections

Rick is an ICC Certified Residential Building Inspector with an Associate Degree in Engineering.  He brings 27 years of inspection experience in the single family & multi-family housing markets, as well as in the commercial & industrial construction industries.  His strengths include the ability to accurately diagnose construction and warranty deficiencies and to provide practical repairs.

Scott March – Senior Project Engineer

Scott’s specialty is residential single family homes of all sizes & types.  He has a Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering from Penn State.   For over 10 years - top rated national homebuilders, small local homebuilders, high-end custom homebuilders, and architects from around the country have worked with Scott on their projects.

Jamie has a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Architectural Engineering from Penn State University. While Jamie has experience with mid-rise residential & commercial projects, his specialty is residential wood frame construction.

Richard J. Morton, P.E. – Project Engineer

R.J. has a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from Bucknell University and is pursuing his Master’s Degree from Villanova University. His specialty has been mid-rise residential condominium & apartment buildings, while collecting a wide range of experience in various residential building types & light commercial buildings.
